Sporting Classics Magazine awards Pine Hill Plantation the 2015 Hunting Lodge of the Year trophy

In the January / February 2016 issue of Sporting Classics Magazine Pine Hill Plantation was awarded the Sporting Classics Magazine 2015 Hunting Lodge of the Year award.

On a previous visit to Pine Hill Plantation, long-time Sporting Classics Magazine Editor in Chief Chuck Weschler exclaimed after wrapping up his final day of quail hunting with back to back doubles “This has been the best quail hunting trip of my life.”

In a recent conversation with Pine Hill Plantation owners Jackie and Doug Coe, Doug stated that “We love to share our passion for quail hunting with our Guests and we strive to preserve the tradition of quail hunting in authentic South Georgia habitat from horseback and mule drawn wagon so that our Guests have the opportunity to experience a taste of a by-gone era. Life has a way of slowing down on a South Georgia quail hunt so that you can savor the more important things in life such as spending quality time with your family and friends.”

Well, if preserving South Georgia quail plantation traditions is Jackie’s and Doug’s goal… they have certainly accomplished it!

For 25 years Pine Hill Plantation has been offering its Guests access to the lifestyle of a private quail hunting plantation owner.

All Guests groups hunt from horseback and mule drawn wagon. Pine Hill Plantation’s hunt staff consists of a Huntmaster on horseback, an Assistant Huntmaster on horseback and a Wagon Driver on the mule drawn wagon. Guests have the option of riding horseback, riding on the very comfortable mule drawn wagon… or doing some of both. Guests go to the field with 4 shooters to a Hunt Party. 2 shooters shoot the covey rise while the other 2 shooters observe… and the pairs of shooters alternate shooting turns with each covey find.

Pine Hill Plantation’s habitat is some of the best wild quail habitat in South Georgia. Located 40 miles to the west of Thomasville, Georgia Pine Hill Plantation is nestled in the heart of the “quail belt” deep within the wiregrass region. In the long leaf pine forest and meticulously maintained habitat you will be challenged with exciting covey rise shooting!

Each Guest Group of 4 or more shooters is hosted in their own private lodge and served by a dedicated house staff who is there to service only their group. Guests select the evening meal from Pine Hill Plantation’s menu in advance of their stay and the Sous Chef prepares their evening meal to order each night and serves them in their private dining room of their private lodge.

Pine Hill Plantation awarded “2013 Orvis Lodge of the Year”

Pine Hill Plantation received the honor of being named the “2013 Orvis Lodge of the Year”. Orvis Lodge of the Year recipients are selected by Orvis senior management based on several key criteria including the review rankings by the lodge’s Guests, consistent high level Guest reviews over several years and Orvis senior management knowledge of the lodge’s excellence of operation.

The award was presented by Dave Perkins, Co-Chairman of The Orvis Company, who has hunted at Pine Hill Plantation on numerous occaissions.

This award places Pine Hill Plantation in the very esteemed position of being the only quail hunting plantation in the world to have received both the Orvis Lodge of the Year award and a Beretta Two Trident ranking.

Pine Hill Plantation was established by owners Jackie and Doug Coe to give people access to the “private plantation lifestyle” even though they might not own their own plantation of have an invitation to one of the fabled South Georgia private quail plantations. When asked about the Pine Hill Plantation venture, Doug responded “We are passionate about preserving the history and tradition of the South Georgia private quail plantations. That includes hunting from horseback and mule drawn wagon when everyone is going the way of Jeep and truck. It includes enjoying the luxury of having your own private lodge with your own house staff and chef that is dedicated to your private group. And, most importantly, it includes thousands of acres of meticulously managed wild quail habitat in the heart of the Georgia wiregrass quail belt. There is no greater thrill than covey rise shooting.”

Asked about a recent Guest’s first day of quail hunting at Pine Hill Plantation, the Guest responded “You won’t believe what we saw today. We shot into a covey of 20 to 30 birds that all got up at once. I managed to shoulder my gun and get off a single shot before they were gone. But the most exciting part was that as the covey flew in escape over a small oak thicket… another covey of 20 birds flushed and followed.”

Pine Hill Plantation’s quail hunting season runs from late October to mid March each year. All Guest hunt in the field from horseback and mule drawn wagon. Each Guest group (4 minimum) enjoys the privacy of their own lodge and dedicated house staff. Pine Hill Plantation has 4 lodges ranging in size to handle Guest groups as small as 4 up to Guest groups as large as 16 in a single lodge where each Guest has a private room.
